Potty Training your Dog
Posted on Oct 26, 2008 under dog training |Potty training your dog should start as early as possible while he has not yet caught up on bad habits like urinating anywhere he likes.
If you are bringing home a puppy then you are lucky because there are better chances of potty training your dog at this age. However, do not expect a puppy to immediately learn how to control his bladder in a few weeks because you will only get frustrated.
Your task in potty training your dog is to take him to the specific areas where you want him to do his thing. But when he commits a mistake do not shout at him or hurt him because he will not learn from this. The best way to deal with accidents is to just wipe the urine or poop immediately and then continue potty training your dog.
Here are a few important tips to remember if you want to succeed in potty training your dog:
â¢Try using newspapers while on the training process to protect your house from dog urine. Potty training a dog can be done in various ways like taking him inside the house but confining him in a room or a small space with newspapers until he learns how to do his thing properly.
â¢Always remember the times when your dog has to urinate or defecate to avoid accidents. One way of potty training your dog is by taking him out at specific periods to enable him to associate urinating and defecating with going out. Potty training a dog especially puppies can be easy if you know the times when they are expected to urinate.
â¢If you have puppies then take special notice of their irregular potty habits. Puppies need to urinate often because their bladders could not hold out their urine for longer periods. Take out your dog the moment he wakes up or a few minutes after he finishes his meal.
â¢Be vigilant of your dogâs actions as they might indicate a desire to urinate. Watch for other signs that your dog wants to urinate or defecate like irregular barking, sniffing or circling the floor.
â¢Always give a reward when your dog successfully does his thing right. When your dog is successful in giving you a signal that he wants to go out to urinate or if he is successful in doing his thing in the proper area then reward him for it.
â¢Consistency is the key. It may take a lot of effort on your part but being consistent will help a lot in potty training your dog. Training your dog today and then allowing him to urinate on the rug the next day will not teach him to urinate in the proper area.
Success in potty training your dog can be so sweet after you have tried your best and sacrificed a little of your time in potty training him.

What works for potty training your child?
I was talking to my mom, curious as to how my aunt got both of my little cousins to potty train so quickly. She said it was due to my aunt giving my cousins an incentive. She told them they would each get a huge toys r us toy if they could both stat using the regular toilet correctly instead of the little plastic practice noe. Within 2 weeks it worked! So I was just curious, what have you done to train your child/a child for potty training?

Potty use comes naturally, so if you train them and get them to use the potty two weeks earlier, OK, but I think it is a waste of time really. In my time I don't recall my mom telling me she used anything special to potty train me.

patience. when the kid is ready they will do it. just keep encouraging them. my 3 year old didn't want to be like his baby brother and have diapers on. my sister used m&m's as the bribe. it will happen with encouragement, bribary, and patience.

My wife and I potty trained our son by using his favorite Elmo doll. We would "feed" him the same time our son ate. Afterward we would take him to the toilet and let him go. We would tell Elmo what a good job he did and that he could watch any show on TV that he wanted. Soon our son wanted the same reward. We always use positive reinforcement. We would also let our son call one of his grandparents or even an imaginary character afterward to tell them what he did. That worked surprisingly well.

Depends on if you have boys or girls. For my boys I would buy some generic cereal, sprinkle 5-7 pieces in the toilet and then tell them to sink it. This helps boys with aim as well as keeps their minds off of the fact that they are being potty trained.
My girl just got it when I started teaching her. She liked being a big girl since there was a baby around. But, she didn't like the way #2 felt at first, so we had to work on that a little longer, lol. Good Luck!

My daughter was using the potty on and off, but I couldn't get her out of training pants until she saw that one of her little friends use the potty.
The friend was a year older and my daughter thought she was a "big girl" so when she realized that the big girl used the potty, she wanted to as well.

My daughter was into balloons at the time. I told her if she made a No. 1, she'd get one balloon, for a No.2, two balloons. If she missed, a balloon would get popped. Three days later, she was fully trained, and I had a houseful of balloons!

Yep i don't care what people say~ a little bribery goes a long way with kids!
Also to get them to want to be there….set up a cd player with a cd of their fav songs~ they will sit and sing until the job is done!!
Try to remember that it will happen~ there is not too many un potty trained adults out there!!

sit them on the potty when they are quite young, obviously without a nappy on! give them a book to read or put the TV on, sit with them and when the do anything you really need to go totally ott with the praise, kids love to get praised, this worked with both of mine in around 4 weeks and they were both totally toilet trained and 2 years.
