Train your Dog to Stop Chewing on the Wrong Things

Most dogs go through a phase where they will chew on anything that will fit in their mouth. There are also dogs that donâ??t even grow out of the chewing phase. There are even some breeds that have a tendency to chew more than other breeds.
It may be cute at first when your puppy begins to chew on your shoes or socks but can be very dangerous. If your dog gets into something poisonous or swallows an object it could lead to death.
Puppies typically will chew more than an older dog and will chew on pretty much anything. It is much easier to teach dogs not to chew at younger ages than it is an older dog. Use this to your advantage.
The first thing to do when training your dog not to chew is to put the items he likes to chew out of reach. It is important to keep these away from your dog at all times. The less exposure the dog has with the items, the less likely he is to chew on them at later times.
When you get everything out of your dogâ??s reach give him something that you donâ??t mind him chewing on. This can be a chew toy, rawhide bones, or rubber bones. Buy one of each and see which one your dog prefers. It may take a while before you dog will stop wanting to chew on other things such as your shoes but be patient.
After your dog has something good to chew on is when you want to start training him. If you catch your dog chewing on something it isnâ??t supposed to you need to let them know that what they are doing is wrong. You can tell your dog this by speaking in a sharp tone and giving him a gentle tap on his head.
Remember to be persistent, dogs are not stupid, if they know they can get away with something they will keep doing it. You should also refrain from yelling at your dog or hitting him at all times, no matter how frustrated you get. When you yell at or hit a dog it only prolongs the dogâ??s learning.
You can even practice with your dog by putting him on a leash and putting an object in front of him. When the dog gets the urge and moves too close to the object give the leash a small jerk. This will teach the dog that you do not want him to chew on the object.
When you are training the dog with a leash make sure to stand off to the side. You do not want to be standing directly behind the dog when you jerk the leash, it could cause damage to their throat. Remember, leash training is not to hurt or punish the dog; it is to simply tell the dog that his actions were wrong.
Training your dog will take a lot of time and persistence. Do not give up, if you do your dog will never learn. Remember to be patient, your dog will not stop chewing over night, it may take weeks or even months.

How do I get my dogs to stop chewing on things??
I have two 7 month old Mexican Wolf/Chow mix puppies. They are both male. As stated, they love to chew on things.
I provide them with plenty of interesting chew toys when I have to leave them alone. I had been leaving them in a room where there was NOTHING except a bed and some dressers, and they have totally ruined the sheets and pillow to the bed, and they even started ripping up the mattress AND tore up a patch in the carpet
I know many people suggest crates to contain dogs but these are already large dogs and will only keep getting larger, and crates are expensive and not exactly in my budget. I cannot leave them outside because it is FAR too hot where I live for them to be outside all day, and they might try to dig out of the yard (they have been known to dig before.) I have taken them to training classes and they both have completed the classes but they still chew on the wrong things!
I really need help figuring out how to get them to stop chewing on furniture and other objects.

Get two very large cats, (preferably a bobcat or leopard), and
then the cats will start chewing on the dogs… problem solved!

Well let us explore the reasons dogs chew things. Firstly puppies chew because they are teething and this is quite natural. Dogs chew things when they are anxious. Dogs chew out of boredom or when seeking attention.
Now that you know some of the reasons dogs chew things we can explore the some of the methods people have used to answer that eternal question “how to stop my dog from chewing?”.
If you have a puppy that is teething make sure that you give your puppy chewing toys. There are many toys available on the market today. Make sure you don’t give your puppy an old shoe or slipper as this will confirm that all shoes and slippers are OK. Don’t make this mistake it’s very hard to undo.
For older dogs make sure that they have chewing toys as well. If you catch your dog chewing something he or she shouldn’t be then reprimand your dog with a firm “no”, loud enough to get your dogs attention and then take the forbidden item away. Replace it with the dogs chew toy if it is handy or encourage your dog to find its chew toy for example “go get your ball”. Reward your dog for playing with their chew toy, this will reinforce that chewing the right things is OK.
When leaving your dog at home if they are still puppies or still chewing things create a “safe zone” for your dog and your mind of course. Litter the safe zone with your dogs chew toys. This will encourage your dog to chew on their chew toys rather than your things. Don’t leave your dog alone for long periods of time as they get anxious and will want to chew on things. Once your dog stops chewing on forbidden things you can get rid of the safe zone and let your dog have the run of your home.
Dogs also chew from boredom so you need to alleviate this boredom by playing with your dog. Dogs love to play so play regularly with your dog and especially use your dogs chew toys. That way you are re-enforcing what you dog will think about chewing.

sterilize them, ASAP, they may still be teething as well as bored, a dog sitter/dog walker, play ball with them, get them tired, what costs more ruined carpet & furniture or kennels, you can make them if your handy with tools, even with pvc pipe.
its like a play pen for toddlers, keep them out of trouble when you can't be with them & training them
the stores sell something called bitter apple, I haven't tried it but have heard some good reviews

They are still pups but the chewing can be fixed with some work. Make sure they get plenty of exercise before leaving the house. I know crates aren't in your price range, but if you shop around I'm sure ya can find a couple that have been used that aren't so expensive. Go ahead and get the largest crate so you won't have to upgrade. When you put them in the kennels, add a few toys in there to keep them occupied. But first and foremost exercise is key. As I said before always make sure they get plenty of exercise so they'll be a little worn out and this will slow down a little of the behavior. Also be sure to stay firm when you catch them doing a bad behavior, correct it immediately. Stay consistent with a routine with them and they will soon learn, it just takes patience and time. Chows love to chew on things. You said you leave them chew toys. Instead of toys try some really big bones. Try some of the basted ones but make sure that they are big enough to last them the whole day. Leave a couple for each dog so they can go from one to the other. That way they won't get bored with just one thing. Also a nice big (& I mean big) stick is another thing you can give them. They will spend hours chewing on a big stick. Goog Luck

you need to spray somthing on it i think it's called bitter apple or something and when they go to chew on it they don't like the smell then they won't bite it
you can get it a wal mart and target
if they don't stop you should punish them by yelling and ignore them completely when they do somthing bad but only ignore them for an hour don't even look at them and then they will understand they were bad
